➊ The most important thing for a citizen is simply to be a good man. He must try to be honest, just and merciful in his private life. This is the primary duty. The reason should not be difficult to understand. The wellbeing of a state ultimately depends on the moral character of its citizens.
একজন নাগরিকের পক্ষে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় এই যে তাকে একজন ভালো মানুষ হতে হবে। তাকে নিজের ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে সৎ, ন্যায়পরায়ণ ও ক্ষমাশীল হবার প্রয়াস করতেই হবে। এটাই তার প্রাথমিক কর্তব্য। এর কারণ অনুধাবন করা কঠিন নয়। একটি রাষ্ট্রের কল্যাণ শেষ পর্যন্ত তার নাগরিকদের নৈতিক চরিত্রের ওপরই নির্ভর করে।
➋ Man is a social being and he can not live alone. He longs for company and always associates with one or more persons of the same age and nature. These are his friends and he is bound with them in ties of friendship. A man who can make friendship with others is really happy and fortunate. A friendless man feels lonely in life and has nobody to help and advise him in the hour of need.
মানুষ একটি সামাজিক জীব ও সে একাকী থাকতে পারে না। সে সঙ্গ চায় এবং সর্বদা এক বা একাধিক সমবয়স্ক ও সমপ্রকৃতির মানুষের সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়। এরাই তার বন্ধু এবং সেই বন্ধুত্বের বন্ধনে সে তাদের সঙ্গে আবদ্ধ। একজন মানুষ যে অন্যদের সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্বের বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হতে পারে, সে প্রকৃতই সুখী ও ভাগ্যবান। একজন বন্ধুহীন মানুষ জীবনে
একাকীত্ব বোধ করে ও তাকে সাহায্য করার বা প্রয়োজনীয় সময়ে পরামর্শ দেবার কেউ থাকে না।
➌ No person can be happy without friends. But you can not receive affection unless you also give it. Love is to be obtained only by giving love in return. If your companions do not love you, it is your fault. They cannot but love you, if you be kind and friendly.
বন্ধু ছাড়া কোনো মানুষই সুখী হতে পারে না। কিন্তু যদি তুমি ভালোবাসা না দাও তবে প্রতিদানে তা পেতে পার না। ভালোবাসা কেবলমাত্র ভালোবাসার বিনিময়ে পাওয়া যায়। যদি তোমর বন্ধুরা তোমায় ভালো না বাসে, তবে তা তোমার ত্রুটি। যদি তুমি হৃদয়বান আর বন্ধুত্বভাবাপন্ন হও, তাহলে তারা তোমায় ভালো না বেসে পারবে না।
➍ Games and sports exercise good effect on us. “Health is wealth” so goes the proverb. A man who does not possess sound health and always suffers from some kind of disease can be nothing. Sound health is the gift of games and sports. They help in the circulation of blood keep our body fit. Again a sound mind can reside only in a sound body.
খেলাধুলা আমাদের ওপর উত্তম প্রভাব ফেলে। প্রবাদ আছে, ‘স্বাস্থ্যই সম্পদ’। একজন মানুষ যে অটুট স্বাস্থ্যের অধিকারী নয় এবং সর্বদাই কোনো না কোনো রকম রোগ ভোগ করে, সে কিছুই করতে পারে না। অটুট স্বাস্থ্য ক্রীড়া ও খেলাধুলার অবদান। তারা আমাদের দেহে রক্তসংবহনে সহায়তা করে দেহ সুস্থ রাখে। আবার একটি সুস্থ মন কেবল একটি অটুট স্বাস্থ্যেই বিরাজ করতে পারে।
➎ An old man had three sons. They always quarreled among them- selves. Old man advised his sons not to quarrel, but they did not listen to him. One day he hit upon a plan. He made a bundle of sticks and then asked each of them to break it. All of them tried one by one but nobody could break the bundle. Then the old man untied it and gave each of them a single stick to break. Now they could easily do this. Then the old man told him about the value of unity.
এক বৃদ্ধ ব্যক্তির তিন পুত্র ছিল। তারা সর্বদা নিজেদের মধ্যে ঝগড়া করত। বৃদ্ধ ব্যক্তি তাঁর পুত্রদের ঝগড়া না করার উপদেশ দিতেন। কিন্তু তারা তাঁর কথা শুনত না। একদিন তিনি একটি পরিকল্পনা করলেন। তিনি একটি কাঠির বান্ডিল তৈরি করলেন ও তাদের প্রত্যেককে সেটি ভাঙতে বললেন। তাদের প্রত্যেকে একের পর এক চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু কেউই বান্ডিলটি ভাঙতে পারল না। তখন বৃদ্ধ মানুষটি বান্ডিলটি খুলে প্রত্যেককে একটি করে কাঠি ভাঙবার জন্য দিলেন। এখন তারা সহজেই তা করতে পারল। তখন বৃদ্ধ মানুষটি তাদের ঐক্যের মূল্য বুঝিয়ে দিলেন।
➏ The child shows the man as mornig shows the day. He is the budding flower. He is the citizen of tomorrow. He is the future bread earner of the family. A child cannot choose, a boy is unable to select his career, a young man finds great difficulty in picking up his profession. Their tender age and experience stand in the way. The parents, with the aid of the teacher, may help to choose the right profession for the young boy. But doing so the parents must not forcible thrust their own desires upon him.
প্রভাত যেমন দিনকে সূচিত করে তেমন শিশুও মানুষকে সূচিত করে। সে হল মুকুলিত পুষ্প। সে ভবিষ্যতের নাগরিক। সে পরিবারের রুজিরুটির ভবিষ্যত সংগ্রাহক। একটি শিশু নির্বাচন করতে পারে না, একটি বালক তার জীবিকাকে নির্বাচন করতে অক্ষম থাকে। একজন তরুণ তার জীবিকা সন্ধান করতে গিয়ে প্রবল বাধার সম্মুখীন হয়। তাদের অল্প বয়স আর অনভিজ্ঞতাই তাদের পথ রোধ করে দাঁড়ায়। পিতামাতারা, শিক্ষকদের সাহায্যে তরুণদের সঠিক জীবিকা নির্ধারণে সাহায্য করতে পারেন। কিন্তু তা করতে গিয়ে বলপূর্বক নিজেদের ইচ্ছাকে তার ওপর চাপিয়ে দেওয়া পিতামাতার পক্ষে অনুচিত।
➐ The Ganga rises in the Himalayas and flows into the Bay of Bengal. It is called the ‘Back-bone of India’. If you think a little, you will see how important the river is. In flood time it fertilizes the land lying on either side, and therefore many millions of hard working men and women grow enough food to support themselves. It is therefore no wonder that the Ganga has been considered sacred by the Hindus from time immemorial.
হিমালয়ের উৎপত্তি লাভ করে গঙ্গা বঙ্গোপসাগরে গিয়ে পড়েছে। একে ‘ভারতের মেরুদণ্ড’ নামে অভিহিত করা হয়। তুমি যদি একটু ভাব, তবে তুমি নদীটির গুরুত্ব অনুধাবন করতে পারবে। বন্যার সময় সে দুধারের জমিকে উর্বর করে এবং তারপরে অগণিত খেটে খাওয়া পুরুষ ও নারী নিজেদের প্রয়োজনে যথেষ্ট খাদ্যোৎপাদন করে। এটা তাই আশ্চর্যের বিষয় নয় যে গঙ্গাকে হিন্দুরা স্মরণাতীতকাল থেকে পবিত্র বলে অভিহিত করে আসছে।
➑ An honest person gets honour and respect from all. It is easy to feel the honesty of a man. But it is very hard to judge a man as the dishonest man pretends to be good. A liar wants
to prove that he is honest. A cheat shows him honest. But actually they are not so.
একজন সৎ ব্যক্তি সকলের থেকে সম্মান ও শ্রদ্ধা অর্জন করেন। একজন মানুষের সততাকে উপলব্ধি করা সহজসাধ্য। কিন্তু একজন মানুষকে বিচার করা খুব শক্ত কারণ একজন অসৎ ব্যক্তি ভালোমানুষের তা আচরণ করে। একজন মিথ্যাবাদী নিজেকে সৎ প্রমাণ করতে চায়। একজন ঠগ্ নিজেকে সৎরূপে প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে চায়। কিন্তু প্রকৃতপক্ষে
তারা তা নয়।
